Forge House Bakery is run by Sue Brown, owner and passionate baker with a background in Food Science, and many years experience of working in the Food Industry including running a successful wedding cake business. In the past village bakeries would have been present in most rural villages but they are now sadly few and far between. We aim to bring real bread to our local community by offering a delivery service to locals and collection points for those further afield. We specialise in naturally slow fermented sourdough breads. Our fundamental belief is that everyone should be able to eat good quality, nutritious and great tasting bread, free from unnecessary additives. There is a great pleasure in creating something wonderful from just three ingredients: Flour, water, salt. We carefully source good quality ingredients and use organic, unbleached and additive free flours milled in the UK. Where possible we also use local ingredients, including honey, ales, eggs, cheese, and milk. We also use herbs and vegetables from our garden. The process of a long fermentation using wild yeasts not only enhances the flavour and texture of bread but also improves digestibility and produces a loaf that is just better for you. Please look through our product pages. As a small microbakery we love to change our weekly breads regularly, keeping a core selection of the most popular items. We are a cookery school for disabled adults 18 plus. At StedyChefs we teach all about the joy and fun to be had whilst cooking ,not only helping improve life skills but building self confidence and making friends along the way. Our whole building is covered in fun graffiti, our chefs wear a full uniform and different coloured bandanas making their time here as fun as possible. We also teach other activities such as art and music, the Beatles actually played in our building in 1961. Our chefs cook everything from scratch and not only this, they grow their own vegetables in our outside space as well as doing outside cooking in warmer months. Our chefs do food related trips also once every six weeks. Some of our chefs volunteer and in the past have worked in local cafes and football stadiums. Our youngest student is 18 and our eldest is 63 years old. The food our chefs create on a daily basis can only be described as phenomenal. We are also part of the International Cookery School Association (School Of Excellence) We also teach our students health and safety in the kitchen. We recently had Merseyside Fire Brigade in our centre to deliver a lesson on hazards that may occur in a kitchen and how to handle them safely. Merseyside Police have also attended our centre to deliver on a lesson on how to stay safe when using the internet. In January of this year, seven of our students gained their Level 2 Food Safety and Hygiene In The Kitchen qualification. It took us over a year of visually and verbally training our students in preparation for their test. As they passed, they are now able to legally work in a professional kitchen environment. One of the students is now actively looking for paid work in the catering sector using his newly acquired qualification. We have also partnered with The Trussell Trust and are now running a food bank from or building with the help of our wonderful students.

CCF strives to improve the social and economic wellbeing of disadvantaged communities by providing opportunities for people to develop their skills, gain qualifications and improve their health. Set up in 1997, Community Connect Foundation (CCF) has been working in partnership with many private and public sector organisations to improve the social and economic wellbeing of the disadvantaged communities in inner city areas. Through its work, CCF has developed, in effect, into a Community Anchor serving a much wider range of residents, communities and geographical areas. Whilst its base in Smethwick is an important one for its ability to reach out to communities in Smethwick, much of its work is delivered across a larger geographical area. With the help and support of managed funding from a variety of sources, we have been able to provide quality service provisions to more than 8,000 people. A substantial number of these people have gained qualifications and moved on to find employment.It demonstrates our determination to reach out into all sections of our communities to provide essential training opportunities, heath advice and youth development support to those that need it most. The success of CCF relies on the charity’s strong partnerships with statutory providers and community-based organisations. Much of CCF’s work is delivered on an outreach basis throughout Sandwell and Birmingham. Having maintained an accreditation from Matrix Standards & Investors in People (IIP) since 2004, we are confident we deliver a quality assured service consistently which is benchmarked by prestigious national standards. Additionally, we are accredited by prominent awarding bodies such as Pearson, Highfield Qualifications & Ascentis for delivering a wide range of Language skills, Functional Skills, Employability Skills and Apprenticeships qualifications.
