There is little that we can be certain about, but we can be confident that a time will come when our current beliefs and assumptions are seen as mistaken, our heroes - like the imperial adventurers of the past - are regarded as villains, and our morality is viewed as bigoted prejudice. So the IAI seeks to challenge the notion that our present accepted wisdom is the truth. It aims to uncover the flaws and limitations in our current thinking in search of alternative and better ways to hold the world. The IAI was founded in 2008 with the aim of rescuing philosophy from technical debates about the meaning of words and returning it to big ideas and putting them at the centre of culture. Not in aid of a more refined cultural life, but as an urgent call to rethink where we are. That rethinking is urgent and necessary because the world of ideas is in crisis. The traditional modernist notion that we are gradually uncovering the one true account of reality has been undermined by a growing awareness that ideas are limited by culture, history and language. Yet in a relative world the paradoxes of postmodern culture has left us lost and confused. We do not know what to believe, nor do we know how to find the answers. The IAI was founded to help address this intellectual crisis. Our research and editorial teams have worked around the clock to face up to this challenge and unearth fresh ways of thinking that might guide us in an uncertain world. When, with the founding of the IAI, we declared that philosophy and big ideas should be at the heart of our culture, we did not do so out of reverence for ideas or an attachment to the academy and intellectual life. We did so because it is these core thoughts and ideas that determine the character of our world and our lives. It is our vision that philosophy and big ideas are not a pleasant reflective addition to our everyday lives but an essential determinant of who and where we are and of what is possible. At the IAI we are committed to finding new and better ways to make sense of the world so that we can navigate a brighter future in an increasingly dangerous world.

The New School is a centre of excellence for training and research in existential psychotherapy, counselling psychology, pastoral care, autism, diversity and coaching. It has attracted many experienced and creative teachers and trainers as well as numerous research supervisors with a record of original research publications in the field. It was founded and established by Prof. Emmy van Deurzen, an international authority on existential therapy, psychologist, philosopher and author of many seminal texts in the field, together with Prof. Digby Tantam, an eminent psychotherapist, philosopher, researcher and influential author in the field of autism. Emmy previously founded the School of Psychotherapy at Regent’s College as well as the Society for Existential Analysis and ensured that the New School courses would be deeply rooted in the tradition of continental philosophy. NSPC offers joint psychotherapy and counselling psychology doctoral programmes with Middlesex University with the option of post-graduate diploma and masters exits. It also offers a masters’ course in existential coaching, two online MSc programmes, a foundation course, short courses, one day workshops and numerous introductory courses. It has a unique online programme, the septimus courses, which are integrated with the doctoral programme, or can be taken as stand-alone modules. It is a unique and dynamic institution, which affords its students the opportunity to pursue their personal and professional interests and establish their chosen careers through theoretical and skills training, alongside supported placements and research. NSPC students tend to be mature, self-reflective, highly motivated and committed individuals who come from many different cultures and backgrounds and have a strong capacity for independent study and learning. My name is Ian Flint and I am a pianist and piano teacher with over 25 years professional experience in music. After reaching the semi-finals of the “BBC Young Musician of the Year” competition, I went on to study for six years at the Royal Northern College of Music with the renowned Russian pedagogue Sulamita Aronovsky (founder of the London International Piano Competition). Therefore there is something of the so-called ‘Russian School’ in my musical DNA, with its focus on richness of sound coupled with economy and effectiveness of physical movement. During this period I appeared frequently as solo recitalist, chamber musician and concerto soloist in concert series and festivals, with a wide repertoire including major works by Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Chopin, Liszt, Debussy, Ravel, Rachmaninov, Shostakovich, Stravinsky, Barber etc. I also took part in masterclasses with Paul Badura-Skoda and Denis Matthews. For my post-graduate studies I was awarded a scholarship from the Countess of Munster Trust. These two years continued the focus on piano performance, combined with a thesis (a re-evaluation of Rachmaninov’s 1st and 4th Piano Concertos). It was also at the RNCM where I gained my first experience of teaching the piano, which I have carried on since, in combination with a career in the music publishing industry. My former company (Edition Peters) collaborated on various projects with the two main examination organisations, Associated Board (gb.abrsm.org) and Trinity (www.trinitycollege.co.uk), which gave me a valuable insight into the philosophy of the examination systems. In recent years I have given piano performances and lecture-recitals for “The Rachmaninoff Society” in several countries, in venues such as London’s South Bank Centre and New York’s Juilliard School.
