It’s inbuilt, so why not learn to use it to your advantage to turn ideas into actions and outcomes? We met at university at the tail end of the last millennium, on a theatre studies BA. Josh then worked with vulnerable adults for a housing association, whilst developing his skills as a storytelling performer in museums, festivals and schools. Lily continued post graduate studies at Central School of Speech and Drama and gained an MA at Goldsmiths, while devising theatre productions as a director. Our paths crossed again on a project with young actors in Mumbai where we discovered we enjoyed working together. On our return we started to deliver open storytelling workshops as a means to develop our product and explore its uses and applications. Initially, we thought storytelling was perfect for presentation skills and museum tours. Now we also use it to investigate and build understanding with individuals and in collaborative groups as well as to grow connections, values and relationships. Ben Joiner became one of the core team in 2014. We were drawn to his in-depth knowledge and expertise in voice and body-language and his gift to comfortably take people outside their comfort zone. Over the past couple of decades, we have honed our skills and our love of training and coaching. We have stayed curious, and use that curiosity to help us adapt and evolve how we use storytelling to the benefit of contemporary working life.

We share the concerns raised by Arts Council England and the International Council of Museums (ICOM) about the risks faced by cultural professionals as well as the threats to cultural heritage because of this conflict and we send our support to all creative practitioners and cultural organisations and institutions affected. 5 June 2020: Stanley Picker Gallery and our partner venue Dorich House Museum recognise we must do more as cultural organisations to be actively anti-racist. We commit to taking immediate steps to implement a clear plan of action to address systemic racism at every level of our organisations, whilst actively seeking and welcoming critical engagement from diverse perspectives in this process. Stanley Picker Gallery at Kingston University is one of the leading university galleries and commissioning venues in the UK, working with artists, designers, students, academics and members of the local community to encourage creativity, learning, research and innovation. Established in 1997 with the ongoing support of the Stanley Picker Trust, the Gallery forms part of Arts Council England’s National Portfolio and is a principal cultural interface between Kingston University and its civic communities in South-West London and beyond. From its island location on the Hogsmill River, our venue is a creative hub, a production site and a presentation space that functions as an “expanded studio” dedicated to commissioning and curating contemporary art and design practice, generating a dynamic programme of exhibitions, events and participation activities staged onsite, offsite and online. Appointed each year through public open call, our Stanley Picker Fellowships in Design and Fine Art support a diversity of contemporary practitioners to research, create and premiere ambitious new work, by providing generous grants, free studio space, professional expertise and valuable access to the world-class workshop facilities at Kingston School of Art. The call for applications opens annually in May. Our Participation Programme involves us working collaboratively with schools, colleges, community groups and local residents of all ages, to deliver a range of creative activities and shared learning and professional development opportunities for students, that engage everyone in the life of the Gallery, our partner venue Dorich House Museum and the wider University. Peat Oberon is an artist blacksmith based at a forge in the grounds of Preston Hall Museum near Stockton-on-Tees in the North-East of England. He originally trained as a craft teacher and taught various subjects including crafts and technical drawing in schools and sixth form college for 15 years before becoming a full-time blacksmith in 1980. Since then he has earned his living and an esteemed world reputation producing a wealth of architectural, sculptural and decorative ironwork. Peat began teaching the craft of blacksmithing in 1990, combining his skills as an artist, craftsman and teacher with his life-long passion for working with metal. At his School of Blacksmithing he delivers quality courses where his students enjoy the expert tuition of a master blacksmith.

Emily Found a Thing, an inspiring mix of unique and playful pieces designed and crafted from found things. The Emily Found A Thing studio is based in Ludlow Shropshire, the makers are Rachel Grevatte who studied art at Bretton Hall College in Yorkshire, she is also a teacher and has worked in museums and galleries. Jim Grevatte has a background in sculpture and is an independent museum curator, their experiences in working with collections and passion for history and craft have merged to form Emily Found a Thing. “Our work at Emily Found A Thing transforms old, broken and discarded things into beautiful and unique handmade pieces that we hope will be treasured. Every item has a story and a history and is one of a kind. The objects we make and the spaces we curate stimulate thought, conversation, creativity and fun.”

Gordon Carter is a British-American artist specializing mainly in oil painting. He has been professionally active creating solo exhibitions and groups shows for over 25 years. His paintings are to be found in public and private collections across Europe and North America. He has also worked as a curator in a museum and as a free-lance curator since 2006. His work as an artist has been focused on society and the individual person's relationship to society. He has always demonstrated a belief and motivation that art is a powerful tool for social change; particularly he has been interested in the power of art to improve the quality of an individual's life experience. Teaching students the basics of art, and how a daily art practice can improve our lives has become an extension of his own art practice.

Tricia Johnson is an artist working across an extensive variety of arts disciplines. She studied Art & Design in the Midlands before moving to the Sussex coast and gaining a B.A. (Hons) Degree. She then went on to achieve various teaching qualifications. She enjoys the challenge and exploration found in absorbing new methods and processes. This has enabled her over the past 20 years to teach a wide variety of art courses across West Sussex. Her sculpture work featured nationally on ITV’s morning programme and exhibitions include West Dean College and Worthing Museum and Art Gallery, West Sussex. She also had the privilege of exhibiting her work in the Awagami International Miniature Print Exhibition, Tokushima, Japan. Along with exhibitions at; Banks Mill Studios Derby, The Art House Wakefield, neo: Gallery Bolton, Gallery@OXO Oxo Tower Wharf South Bank London, Hong Kong Baptist University Hong Kong and Cube gallery Moscow. After a period focusing on other disciplines, Tricia returned to printmaking and the joy of the process is what pushes her work forward creatively. Learning different printing methods has helped her to begin experimenting with distinctive approaches to her prints and printing style. Tricia continues to enjoy drawing and working painterly with a variety of mixed media, developing her own instinctive style over many other art disciplines.

Gawthorpe Textiles Collection (GTC) is the operating name of independent museum and registered charity The Rachel Kay-Shuttleworth Textile Collections. Since its establishment in 1959, the charity has existed to deliver its powerful founding vision focused on education, public access to the collection for all and the promotion of wellbeing. The aims and purposes of the charity have never been more relevant as the country faces the challenges created by the Covid-19 pandemic. GTC operates from the Gawthorpe Hall estate in Padiham, Lancashire; family home to founder Rachel Kay-Shuttleworth MBE (1886- 1967), a life long collector of global textile and craft items. Rachel was a prolific lace maker and embroiderer. She was also a philanthropist who devoted her life to actively improving the social welfare of the communities on her doorstep. The charity’s long term ambition is to work in partnership to realise Rachel's vision of creating a craft house, a centre of excellence for learning in textiles. As the only dedicated textile collection of its size and variety in Lancashire, the collection which stands at over 30,000 pieces of global provenance, is a truly remarkable resource. It is one of the most diverse, interesting and encyclopaedic textile collections in the UK and is known to specialists worldwide. In a digital age which is seeing a strong resurgence in the value of hand crafts, GTC champions traditional craft skills, celebrates creativity and delivers programmes of activity which have profound and positive life changing effects on individuals’ mental wellbeing and life skills, promoting a sense of community - all through participation in craft. Key activities undertaken by the charity fall into two strands; management and care of the collection including research, documentation, acquisition, interpretation and conservation. Secondly, sharing the collection with the public; catering to a broad range of ages, cultural backgrounds and skill levels. This includes delivering historic and contemporary exhibitions, artist collaborations, workshops, talks, tours, research and study visits, as well as outreach in the local community through Valley Street Textiles Studio (a joint initiative with Calico Homes).

Based in her cosy cottage in Whins of Milton near Stirling, Louise Cullen set-up Tranceform in 2016 to provide mindfulness coaching in a nurturing, creative and inspiring atmosphere. She and her associates are all passionate about passing on the benefits of regular mindfulness practice and the wonderful act of self care. Learn more about the people behind Tranceform below. One of the founding members of Tranceform, Louise now runs the business from her base in Stirling. A human first and foremost, she wants to share her knowledge and love for mindfulness with others. Louise believes in bringing mindfulness into everyday life in a real, practical way that works with your lifestyle. This means it is accessible to everyone. Following an intrigue in working in a different way, she partook in a 10 week Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction course at the University of Strathclyde. This life changing course has had a direct impact on her wellbeing, family and friends. Louise trained as a Meditation Facilitator with the University of Strathclyde where they offer a mindfulness meditation practice each day for staff and students. She also completed the Mindfulness Foundation Qualification and Mindfulness Certificate Qualification from the Mindfulness Association which took place at Samye Ling Tibetan Centre in Dumfries and Galloway. She is a current member of the Mindfulness Association and the CIPD. Louise has developed her own eight session coaching programme and carries out 1-2-1 coaching and practice either one off or over 8 sessions. There are regular 8 week programmes and workshops taking place too. Louise has also recently worked with some wonderful corporate clients including Creative Scotland, Anderson Strathern, Prudential, The National Galleries of Scotland, The Smith Art Gallery and Museum, Brown Forman, CIPD, Kained Holdings and Moet Hennessy. Louise has a postgraduate diploma in HR Management and is currently developing further programmes in Mindfulness which will be available soon. Married to Andrew, stepmum to Mimi and mummy to Harris and Indie. She also has two small black hairy dogs, George and Coco.

Ffynone House School

Ffynone House began life as St Winifrede’s Convent School in the latter part of the 19th Century. Pupils were taught by nuns of the Ursuline Order, who still retain a presence at Stella Maris Convent close by. Part of the school suffered bomb damage during the Second World War and a photograph of the bombed science laboratory can be seen at Swansea Museum. The Convent continued to provide education for boys and girls after the war, and in 1964, a new block was constructed with a purpose built hall, classrooms and laboratories. However, the opening of Bishop Vaughan Catholic School in 1966 enabled a larger number of students to be accommodated, and in 1969 the convent school closed. Today, reminders of the St Winifred’s can be seen in the stained glass window in the entrance hall, the old school crest in the refectory, and the cross on the front façade.
