Hi! I’m Helen. Yoga teacher, plant power nutrition enthusiast and anatomy nerd. I’m a lover of life and travel, trail running and surfing, plant-based food and sunshine. I believe in living life to the fullest, by doing what I can to feel optimal every day. My passion is sharing all that I’ve learned through yoga, meditation, nutrition and coaching, with others to feel their best too. I want to help you to be the best version of yourself: physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually, each and every day, because I know that yoga works profoundly on all these levels in making positive changes and improving lives. Take a class with me. My first experience of yoga was with Katy Appleton’s, Geri Halliwell DVD at age 15, that my mum gave me! Being a competitive swimmer at the time and completely focussed on my sport, I wasn’t impressed – I found it slow and boring. It wasn’t enough of a work out and I didn’t see the point (sorry Katy, I think you’re amazing now!). Oh, young Helen, how little you understood! Although I didn’t ‘get’ it at the time, I firmly believe that this was still a poignant introduction to yoga, something that would change my life in just a few years to come – thanks mum! Fast forward a few years, when I was 23 and teaching english as a foreign language in Japan. I started Karate lessons with one of my students and realised just how incredibly inflexible I was. One of my other students was training to become a yoga teacher and my interest was sparked. I started practising in my 11th story apartment (overlooking Mt Fuji nonetheless) several times a week to a Bryan Kest DVD and I became hooked on his Power Yoga style. This was more like it. The same year, one of my flat mates gave me a copy of The Power of Now, by Eckhart Tolle, and for me this was a turning point in my way of thinking, literally. I realised that we can be in control of our minds and that our minds should not control us. As my practice developed and I met and trained with great teachers, what began as a purely physical practice, evolved into something so much more. Yoga is a practice of the mind, body and spirit but we all have our own entry points. For most of us in the West, it is the physicality that attracts us. For some it is the desire for relaxation. But sooner or later, we find we’re gaining so much more than what we originally signed up for. It is this whole body and mind approach and the transformative effects that yoga has, that I want to share with you. How many emotions can you name? How many do you think your children can name? Research suggests we learn around 6 emotion words when we are young to help express how we feel, then we stop! We don't learn anymore - even when we're teens or adults! We try to navigate life's ups and downs using approximately 6 words! No wonder we can feel a bit mixed up sometimes! Research also suggests that we are all born with the same set of emotions (primary emotions) and we learn others (secondary emotions) as we grow from the age of 2 or 3. These secondary emotions are learnt from our experiences, where we are from and from our caregivers. So after a number of years research, Headssup was set up in 2019 to do 2 things: 1. increase the emotional vocabulary of children from 6 words to 15 words & 2. to do that within a psychological framework that included primary and secondary emotions How did we do that? 1. We created a character called Emi (short for emotional intelligence). 2. Emi became a teddy (see left hand page). A soft, fluffy conversation starter or comforter. 3. We then created a children's book to help Emi explain what primary and secondary emotions are in a child friendly way. Helping our little ones to learn up to 15 words to help explain how they feel that are all psychologically framed - helping make more sense of how they and others feel. 4. Next we thought it would be nice to have Emi animated. So we created 2 minute animations to go with each story that you can log in to (see a short clip of one below). 5. But we didn't stop there. Communicating our emotions can be hard. And our emotions can be effected by our physical and social health. So Emi also helps children learn how to communicate their emotions in the next story ELASTIC and what they can do each day to stay physically healthy in the story HEALTHY ME and finally, how to stay socially healthy in the story BLOOM AND BLOSSOM. 6. ELASTIC, HEALTHY ME AND BLOOM AND BLOSSOM story books also come with a link to their own 2 minute animation. 7. Finally, for our cooler 9-11 year olds, we created a character called Feelix and his team. Feelix has 6 story books and animations and includes help with high school transitions and healthy friendships. 8. My Friendly Neighbourhood Dance Studio. As someone who as been teaching and working alongside children and young people for 25 years, I genuinely believe I have the most privileged and fun job in the world. Being an educator and innovator through dance and movement has not always been straightforward; however, the rewards have always far outweighed any struggles. Simply seeing a kid dart across the floor smiling, creating a silly move, or an aspiring dancer suddenly find their confidence to shine. Priceless. Teaching and nurturing the next generation is a responsibility I don’t take for granted. These dancers are someone’s son or daughter, and it’s a teachers job to guide them and do right by them. I’ve always seen teaching as a two way learning stream; me teaching and inspiring the dancers, and in return the dancers inspiring and teaching me. Over the years, I’ts been a blessing to have met and worked alongside talented young people and professionals and been involved in some unforgetable creative projects and performances. These life changing experiences drive me to keep creating and sharing this energy with other children and young people. Having to evolve, think on one's feet and reflect on how to approach a project, a personality, or simply, how best to deliver the next class is an educator's creative responsibility. Being a dancer and teacher taught me to be innovative, present, and reflective and surrounded me with laughter and creativity. All of the above is not only positive for my mental health and well-being but reflected in the children, young people, and now adults I teach at Smikle Dance Studio. My vision for Smikle Dance Studio was to create a friendly and welcoming space where my personality and body of work could continue to flourish and grow. I feel like my studio is me. My years of experience as a dancer, performer and teacher blend into one environment shared with the local community, my SYD dancers, my fantastic team and my professional teachers.
