On becoming an independent social enterprise, we went on to deliver large-scale neighbourhood regeneration programmes like the Single Regeneration Budget, New Deal for Communities and Neighbourhood Renewal Funding. In 2011 Renaisi was part of the consortium that set up the Big Local programme. Our role managing the ‘reps’ took us beyond London and allowed us to bring together the two halves of our expertise; supporting communities and social research. Alongside that national work we delivered services in Islington, Haringey and Hackney that helped migrant communities get the most out of the local school system. While the policy and funding landscape has changed a lot in the last 20+ years, ‘place’ has remained the lens we use to consider our work. We’re constantly learning from the different perspectives we see from working directly with communities, with the providers of services and the investors in communities. It gives us a unique perspective on how systems work and how to improve places fairly.

Bike for Good is a charity and social enterprise which started in July 2010 in a small stall in Glasgow’s Barras market. With a few donated bikes, a cobbled-together tool kit and a team of volunteers with a huge amount of passion and drive, Bike for Good (then known as Glasgow Bike Shed) was born! We now have three thriving Community Hubs in Glasgow and an amazing team of 42 staff members and 50 + volunteers who are changing thousands of lives through cycling. Many of our wonderful volunteers have shared their experiences of working with Bike for Good through our online case studies. Bike for Good provides access to low cost but good quality bikes whilst diverting tonnes of waste from landfill. These bikes are kindly donated by members of the public and are then refurbished and sold in our two Community Hubs. Find out more about how to donate your bike. On average, our team of mechanics refurbish over 1000 bikes per year, diverting tonnes of waste from landfill while also providing access to affordable bikes to the public. Find out more about how to buy a refurbished bike. As well as the environmental impact of this work, the income from bike sales helps to fund our work in the community. To keep your bike in tip-top condition, our expert mechanics offer a comprehensive bike maintenance and repair service. The aim is to keep you cycling all year round. In addition, we offer a comprehensive programme of inclusive projects which promote, support and encourage greater levels of cycling. Cycling has a multitude of benefits for society, from environmental improvements to health promotion and financial savings. We have created a series of projects and services which seek to highlight this to the public and fill a gap in current provision. You Can Cook is a celebration of food, people and cultures!  You Can Cook was established in 2007 and was set up to encourage and empower local communities to make informed choices about their food and health.  Healthy eating initiatives are promoted through every service from cookery classes, demonstrations, workshops, talks and seminars with training for young people in primary and secondary schools, youth groups, families, elderly, disadvantaged communities and individuals with allergies and food intolerances. A safe and relaxed environment is created where people from all ages can come together, socialise, rediscover and explore a healthier approach to cooking with simple and nutritious ingredients using seasonal and local produce. You Can Cook has created an off-shoot, You Can Grow which helps to raise awareness of how and where our food comes from and also introduces the concept of growing food free of chemical fertilisers and pesticides in client’s gardens and allotments.  This is done by teaching clients how to convert their outdoor/indoor paces into edible gardens or working together in community allotments using organic/permaculture principles. Another initiative to come out of this off-shoot is the launch of a book for growers in Scotland, aimed at aspiring growers of all ages, beginners and experts too. The book is a simple, practical guide to help purchasers take the first steps to growing their own food and have fun at the same time. There is no need to buy expensive starter kits to get growing as the book is full of easy to find and use household items that are normally thrown away and which can be recycled to help in the growing process. This is the first book published by a Community Interest Company and Social Enterprise aimed at Scottish growers. The book is priced at £12.99 and proceeds from sales mean that the Organisation is able to reach more families and communities across Scotland, helping them to grow and cook their own delicious food. The book is available in all big and independent bookstores in the UK, including online through our website.

I used journaling during the stressful periods in my life – moving countries, moving homes, relationship breakdown. I love working with individuals and organisations brimming with ideas, hungry for growth, with creative sparks and love for their work popping from the moment they wake up! And yet, there is something getting in their way. That’s where I come in. I help clients move from block to breakthrough using creative approaches of journaling and coaching. I am creative and enthusiastic – and grounded and practical. In journaling I invoke imagination and play as, often, writing from “I” can be tiring. What is needed to jolt us out of our habitual or negative thinking are creative prompts. I always thought the world didn’t end at the end of my street! Growing up on the tiny island of Guernsey, I felt the pull of the other side, beyond St Peter Port Harbour! And stepping out, I… …..spent about a decade working overseas – Russia mostly, in Moscow and Ekaterinburg. I also lived in the Czech Republic, Japan, Italy, France and Germany. I went on many work trips to Ukraine, Romania and Bulgaria for human rights organisations. ……I co-founded and ran a number of companies. Raise Your Game, a social enterprise which supported the young unemployed start their own businesses in London, and coached young students in pupil referral units and youth offending. Even earlier, I co-founded Communicating Cultures which worked in Russia on an ethnic minorities and the media project with partners the BBC Training School in Ekaterinburg and the Interethnic Cooperation Centre which is still going strong!
