English Language Centre CIC is a registered Community Interest Company - a social enterprise where any profits generated are reinvested back into providing more opportunities. We believe that too many valuable members of our communities throughout the UK (and abroad), find it difficult to integrate and/or find sustainable, rewarding employment. For each individual facing either protracted unemployment and/or marginalisation within our communities, this is a tragedy that can impact their entire lives. There are also the wider economic and social costs to consider. There are a great number of specific reasons why people can struggle to integrate and access the sort of job opportunities they would like, but being unable to communicate effectively is the most fundamental barrier of all. Much of our focus is therefore involved in improving communication and language skills. English Language Centre CIC benefits from over thirty years of experience in English language education, training and consultancy, both in the UK and abroad. This experience enables us to help people improve their language and communication skills, and so build the foundations for better lives and better communities.

Craven College – a Further Education College based in Skipton, North Yorkshire, “The Gateway to the Dales”. Our unique position – at the juncture of West Yorkshire and East Lancashire enables us to offer a variety of further and higher education courses, including apprenticeships, undergraduate degrees and part-time adult education. Craven College started life in 1825 as the Skipton Mechanics Institute on the High Street in Skipton. During the Second World War the Skipton Art School and Skipton Technical Institute were established. In 1954 the Skipton Art School and Technical Institution become the Craven Institute for Further Education. In 1974, the College was renamed the Craven College of Adult Education and the full-time courses flourished mainly leading to secretarial work, hospitality and catering, social work and small business management. The Aireville Campus was developed in 1989 adjoining Aireville School (now The Skipton Academy). The Auction Mart Campus was later developed to accommodate all land-based courses and The Aviation Academy was established in Yeadon at Leeds Bradford Airport. Tyro Training was established in 2003 offering flexible training, consultancy and support to business across the North of England. With its HQ at Craven Cattle Mart in Skipton, Tyro Training also has a training base in Scarborough. The Animal Management Centre was opened for students in 2018 with specialist rooms for aquatics, invertebrates, nocturnals, reptiles, amphibians and small mammals. From its premises in Ripon, Evolve supports young people from across North Yorkshire with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties and offers full Study Programmes, with a focus on work experience and skills for employment.

The West Bowling Youth Initiative (WBYI) is a small charity and local voluntary sector organisation based in a multi-cultural area of Bradford. It was established in 1991 by local people to work with predominately young British Pakistani Muslim men, especially those who were at risk of offending. The initial project was supported by The Prince’s Trust and subsequently gained funding and backing from other charities, EU and government funding and ongoing support from the local authority. Over the last 25 years, WBYI has broadened its remit and has developed a strong reputation for successfully engaging hard to reach young people, including those excluded or struggling at school, ex-offenders and those in the criminal justice system and others facing a difficult transition to adulthood. WBYI currently works with a core age range of 13 to 25 year olds including, employment support programmes; alternative curriculum programmes for schools and crime prevention work through personal and social development projects. In addition, school holiday programmes and sports activities cater for local 7 to 13 year olds and increasingly there is a demand for volunteering and leisure activity.

At the heart of the Brighouse community is Brighouse High School and we are delighted to start a new academic year on the front foot with you all, looking forward to another successful year working together. The summer results showed the determination and resilience of our students and staff and we were delighted to see our Year 11 and Year 13 cohorts secure the qualifications they needed to take those important next steps in life. Even more satisfying, perhaps, was seeing the development of those young people over the years into young adults ready to contribute to society. Despite the continuing difficulties of last year, our school and our community continued to thrive and we are proud of all of their achievements. A particular highlight of last year was the relaunching of our wide and varied extra –curricular activities and our trips and visits. Everyone was delighted to see the Lakes trip back in the calendar and the Year 7 students had a wonderful week up in the Lake District during that final week of June. There have also been other trips out to the coast for coursework studies in Geography and to Doe Park and Bradley Woods for outdoor pursuits as well as planning ahead for the return of the Berlin trip and the Ski trip. As we took the step back to formal examinations, we saw the incredible achievements of our students who have worked hard for many years to secure the richly deserved outcomes from the key stage 4 and key stage 5 examinations. As always, I am delighted to say that Brighouse High School students are heading into the wider world to embrace their next challenges, whether that be with us for two more years in our sixth form, in college, university or employment and the school continued to strengthen the qualification outcomes in many key areas. In our vibrant and successful sixth form college there were outstanding results in academic and vocational qualifications and our post-16 students moved on to their places in higher education, employment or training. In key stage 4 we were delighted to see that the majority of our students achieved the important GCSE benchmark qualifications in English and Maths, the vital springboard into their next stages in education and life beyond school, and succeeded across our rich creative curriculum too. As always though, I am sure that you will agree that our school is about so much more than just qualifications. From the moment our Year 7 students step foot across the threshold, they are challenged to contribute and to achieve within a warm, caring and supportive environment. The opportunities within and beyond the traditional curriculum are rich and diverse at Brighouse High School; we encourage all of our students to become part of our community and build on the sense of togetherness, which is so important to us, and importantly recognised by those who visit us. Ofsted recognised the strength of relationships in our school when we were inspected in February of this year, commenting that ‘positive relationships are a cornerstone of the school’ and recognising that ‘everyone cares at Brighouse’. It is on the firm foundations of these relationships that we build our success with our students and the community. We will continue to deliver strong classroom practice within an appropriate and personalised curriculum, a positive ethos and behaviour and, with support from home, we will continue to deliver successful outcomes for all.

Employment We have an impressive record for graduate employment, with 96.5% of our undergraduate and 96.6% of postgraduate students in work or further study within fifteen months after graduating (HESA Graduate Outcomes 2019/20, UK domiciled, other activities excluded). The University places a great deal of importance on industry experience and therefore 100% of our undergraduate students have the opportunity to undertake professional work experience during their studies. Enjoyable Since 2008, £156 million has been spent on campus development making sure our students have access to some of the best facilities in the country. Our campus also has a vibrant social scene and we have a very active Students’ Union with more than 110 clubs and societies. Enterprising The University is growing its reputation as a leader in the field of enterprise. Garforth Academy mainly serves the community of Garforth with some pupils travelling further to school from communities such as Micklefield, Kippax, Colton, Whitkirk, Swillington, Aberford and Crossgates. Whilst the majority of pupils live within walking distance we do have a broad intake of primary schools with current year 7 pupils coming from 27 primary schools. The Key Stage 2 APS on entry is broadly in line with national average but some year groups are slightly below national average on entry. The academy is larger than average, and has around 300 pupils per year group in Key Stages Three and Four with a large 6th form in excess of 400 pupils. We serve a diverse community and whilst a large proportion of pupils come from affluent backgrounds, some pupils live in areas containing pockets of deprivation, characterised by high unemployment, an inadequate employment base, low average income levels, poor physical and mental health and a degraded urban environment. It is therefore important that our curriculum meets needs the needs of all learners from a wide range of backgrounds. The proportion of disadvantaged pupils is below the national average (16% v 29%) as is the number currently in receipt of Free School Meals (7% v 12%). Pupils within the academy are mainly White British, with only 2.7% of pupils having EAL. The number of pupils with an EHCP is 1.3%, and a small number of pupils requiring behavioural and emotional support attend The Elland Academy in Leeds, which is a registered Alternative Provision within Delta Academies Trust. We serve our local community and work closely with partners to plan a set of learning experiences that meet the needs of our pupils. In addition, we use local, national and international labour market intelligence to plan courses to best prepare our young people for life beyond school. We have the highest standards and expectations for all pupils and we strive to provide a curriculum that respects the needs of all pupils as well as one that encourages young people to seek continuous development and improvement.
