The Thomas Aveling School

the thomas aveling school

Rochester

The Thomas Aveling School is a very successful non-selective mixed school; we are a happy school, a school for all abilities and a school for the local community of Rochester. We create a culture of high expectations and success for all students and staff. This is grounded in a supportive ethos where each student is treated as an individual, with their needs and ambitions supported by a great pastoral and children’s team. A student’s well-being is of equal importance to their academic progress, the support we offer is outstanding. As well as supporting students of all abilities to make fantastic academic progress, Thomas Aveling provides an excellent all round education valuing Music, Drama, Sport and the Arts highly with exceptional facilities – we regard these subjects as providing the soul of the school and give students additional opportunities to excel. The standard of teaching at the school ensures strong progress is seen in the core subjects of English, Maths and Science without affecting the time given to creative and practical subjects - students enjoy the full breadth of experiences. As a previously designated Training School, we take staff development very seriously. We are a leading and founding member of Kent and Medway Teacher Training. We lead the Medway Valley Partnership of training schools, and over 15 teachers are trained every year at Thomas Aveling, many of whom are then employed within Thomas Aveling or the wider Trust. Everything we do as a school is grounded in our 5 Student Virtues – the characteristics we want to develop in all our students – Ambition, Resilience, Respect, Pride and Creativity. Students are given a massive range of opportunities in and out of the classroom to develop these virtues. Our website can only ever give you a flavour of what Thomas Aveling has to offer, please do come, and visit us at one of our Open Events to meet our fantastic students and amazing and dedicated staff.

Success is celebrated in all aspects of school life as we recognise the needs of each individual and where everyone really does matter. As a bi-lateral school, Ashlawn is the perfect blend of tradition and innovation. Smith Vocational and Agricultural High School

smith vocational and agricultural high school

Smith Vocational and Agricultural High School was established as a result of a bequest in the will of Oliver Smith. Mr. Smith was born in Hatfield, Massachusetts in 1766. He engaged in farming at an early age, and acquired large wealth by stock-raising. He was a magistrate for forty years; twice he was a representative to the legislature; and in 1820, he was a member of the State constitutional convention. He never married and may have been considered eccentric by his neighbors, but he amassed a large fortune, which he bequeathed to establish the "Smith Charities," a unique system of benevolence. At his death in 1845, his estate was valued at nearly $400,000; and the will was contested by his family. Legendary lawyer and legislator Daniel Webster successfully defended the will for the city of Northampton. The fund for the Agricultural School became available for use in 1905, and the amount of $50,000 was turned over to the City of Northampton for the purchase of land on which to build Smith School. The school opened for students in 1908 as the first vocational school in Massachusetts. Since 1845, when the fund to develop an agricultural school was established, Smith Vocational and Agricultural High School has been at the forefront of a movement toward excellence in vocational training. Today, Smith Vocational and Agricultural High School is a public high school for residents of Northampton and tuition students from all of Hampshire County on a "space available" basis. Students spend alternating weeks in shop and academic programs as they prepare for both a high school diploma and a Certificate of Occupational Proficiency. Graduates of Smith School are expected to meet academic standards, achieve occupational competency, develop ready-to-go work skills, and prepare for continuing education. Integration of technology in course work is encouraged, and students have access to state-of-the-art computer labs with Internet capability. A focus on the acquisition of key life skills-good work habits, reliability, self-confidence, resilience, problem-solving-serves to guide students in their personal growth.

The Reset Project

the reset project

I help forward-thinking organisations boost their leaders' and teams' health, wellbeing and resilience to transform their productivity, their profit and their reputation. All too often, corporate health and wellbeing is reactive rather than preventative - trying to tackle a problem once it has appeared, rather than avoiding the problem in the first place. Not only does this send healthcare costs and absence rates through the roof (not ideal), it does little to empower people to establish a healthy lifestyle that will benefit them, their family and the business both now and in the long term. Unhealthy lifestyles are having a debilitating impact on business performance. Exhausted, burnt out, unmotivated, stressed, lethargic, 'wired and tired' people at work are leading to snowballing absence rates and healthcare costs, and are killing morale, productivity and profits. rachP1-2.jpg It's clear to see the impact this is having on business - in 2019 alone UK businesses lost almost £92 million to poor health. And it's not just the business that suffers... when someone isn't looking after themselves - whether that's poor sleep, stress, nutrition, mobility or connection - their families, communities and wider society all miss out. In particular, burnt out, run down. detached leaders will have a huge knock-on effect across all areas of the business, both from a people and an operational perspective. But it doesn't have to be this way. 80% of chronic diseases are caused by lifestyle - and lifestyle is something we can change, together. Through 1:1 and group coaching, I take leaders and teams through a systematic lifestyle behaviour change framework that tackles eight key areas of health and wellness. The result? They're equipped with simple but alarmingly effective tools and techniques at their disposal to make positive, sustainable changes to their lifestyle. They take responsibility and action in supporting their long-term physical and mental health - and everyone benefits (except the healthcare providers, probably).
