ClayKilnCraft is an independent educational and training pottery set in the heart of Crystal Palace, South East London. Started in 2014 by ceramic artist Aliya Rashid giving wheel lessons in her studio for beginners, the company has evolved into a thriving creative space teaching people of all abilities to throw, handbuild and explore their inner artist while improving and building on their skills. After graduating in Ceramics at Camberwell College of Art with a first class honours degree, Aliya fell into teaching by accident after she was recommended by a friend to teach pottery at a centre  for special needs adults in London. ‘It was a very challenging, but rewarding experience. I came away from that summer project completely humbled. I knew I wanted to do more. ‘It started small, with monthly lessons. When my students wanted more I found space in a basement converted toilet! And yes, it was as grim as it sounds. When it rained the smell was… very pungent! ‘I was thrilled to find the shop I’m in now. It’s taken a lot of hard work to get it to this stage. It’s all been done with sheer hard work, doing two jobs to finance everything. This is an independent studio and I’m determined it should stay that way. The atmosphere is relaxed, fun and supportive whatever my students aims are. The studio is looking fantastic and the facilities improve on a weekly basis. ‘As well as core courses and classes for beginners and intermediates, we now offer open access to people of all abilities. The studio helps people to develop at their own pace to make what interests them whether they are hobby potters and just want to relax after a hard days work or they are serious potters looking to sell or exhibit their work. Echo Echo Dance Theatre Company is based in Derry in Northern Ireland where it has its home studios in Waterloo House on the historic City Walls. Echo Echo was founded by Ursula Laeubli and Steve Batts in Amsterdam in 1991. The company worked extensively throughout Europe before moving to Derry in 1997. Echo Echo favours collaborative and co-operative working methods. The company is organised as an ensemble with a group of artists who are committed to long term collaboration and mutual support. Echo Echo creates touring, site and event specific productions, a festival of dance and movement, a programme of artistic residencies, performances by visiting artists and companies, and a wide variety of participatory projects with a broad range of groups and individuals. The style of our work varies greatly. Rather than being defined by a particular aesthetic or idiom, we approach dance broadly as the art of “poetic movement”. We understand that dance has a similar relation to our everyday movement as the poetic use of language does to our normal, everyday speech. Being “poetic” in movement is natural and universal, and accordingly our approach is organically suited to many levels of participation. We do not see a rigid or fundamental distinction between “professional” projects and “participatory” projects. We are committed to high quality artistic practice and to creating numerous ways for people to join in. Hello, My name is John Bunyan I teach the Wudang style of Tai Chi Chuan as a complete Martial Arts system. I teach all 5 elements of Tai Chi Chuan: Hand Form Pushing Hands Self Defence Weapons (Sword, Sabre and Spear) Internal Strength I’ve been studying Dan Docherty’s Practical Tai Chi Chuan style since 1990 and teaching in the UK for the last 25 years. I am a certified level 8 Chief Instructor of this style (see resource on the menu for Instructor levels) and a Tai Chi & Qigong Union for Great Britain senior instructor. Students of other styles who want to learn more about the martial side of Tai Chi Chuan are welcome. Tai Chi Chuan We train using the hand form and pushing hands, but we also learn the self-defence applications, which is where the hand form was derived from. Learning the applications also helps with focus when practising the hand form. We use other training techniques such as running thunder hand, pad work, 5 element arm, San shou etc. The Spear, Sabre and Sword are taught as forms with applications. Tai Chi for Health Using the hand form our aim is to offer a series of flowing, connected movements that help improve balance, coordination, posture and circulation. It also helps to relax the mind as well as the body. The hand form is a type of moving meditation. We also use pushing hands. These are partner drills used to train whole body coordinated movements. They are beneficial because you are training to move with your partner, not against them. 8 Pieces of Brocade Qigong is taught to help improve movement in the body’s joints. To stimulate the nervous system and circulation. Students who are practising for the health-giving aspects are always welcome to join in and learn the martial aspects of the art.

THE BLACKTHORPE BARN WAS BUILT ROUND 1550, PROBABLY BY JOHN DRURY WHO HAD JUST ACQUIRED THE MANOR OF ROUGHAM THROUGH THE DISSOLUTION OF THE GREAT BENEDICTINE ABBEY AT BURY ST. EDMUNDS IN 1539. It is timber framed with a vast, striking thatched roof measuring over 30 metres long. The barn’s purpose was to be used for the threshing and storage of grain and it continued as a grain store until 1985. You can read more about the barn’s history here. These days the threshing barn and the surrounding buildings are used for events including the festive craft market at Christmas and other art exhibitions during the year, as well as for weddings in the summer months. We host national and international artists from all cultures and career stages. We create a supportive and stimulating context in which new work and ideas can be developed, tested and shared. The bespoke and award-winning spaces we provide for residents and visitors to live, meet and work in, are located on an outstanding site overlooking Loch Long and the Firth of Clyde, just one hour from Glasgow, on Scotland’s west coast. Founded in 1999 by Peter and Eileen Jacobs, Cove Park is a charity funded by Creative Scotland, by trusts and foundations and by the generosity of individuals. Since 2000, Cove Park has hosted over 1,500 artists and our former residents include Margaret Atwood, Ann Carson, Abraham Cruzvillegas, Mariana Castillo Deball, Alasdair Gray, Beca Lipscombe, Tom Morris, Ciara Phillips, Elizabeth Price, Charlotte Prodger, Simon Starling, Christos Tsiolkas, Jan Verwoert and Louise Welsh. We develop residency programmes in partnership with leading national and international companies, art schools and organisations, including Varuna – Australia’s National Writers’ House, Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, the Gaelic Books Council, Lolli Editions, Senegal’s RAW Material Company, The Royal Scottish Academy, CCA: Centre for Contemporary Arts, Fluxus Art Projects, The Work Room and more.
